Your Ultimate Guide to Exfoliation

Do you know the best exfoliating method for your skin type?

Exfoliation is the process of removing dead cells off the skin. You’ll realize that as you grow older, your skin will no longer be able to naturally exfoliate itself, leaving you with dull-rough skin.

Exfoliating  twice a week makes sure you get the most out of your skincare products. By removing the dead cells, you are peeling off a physical barrier that would have prevented your products from dissolving into your skin. Your skincare products are now more effective, and you should see results faster.

Types of exfoliants

Please be mindful when exfoliating your skin. First, you should know that there are two main types of exfoliants. Physical exfoliants and Chemical exfoliants.

Physical Exfoliants

Also known as the manual exfoliants. The name says it all – Expect a bit of force to be used. These exfoliants are cream-like but with some hard particles. These particles are responsible for scrubbing dead cells off your skin.

You need to be careful, keep off exfoliants with large particles that will tear your skin which cause scarring to your face. Make sure the products you use are enough gentle.

Chemical Exfoliants

Chemical exfoliants remove dead cells by chemical action. They weaken the bonds between dead cells and therefore, making them easier to wash off. Some cleaners have exfoliating properties.

Nothing fancy here, some look like your regular cleanser and others come as pre-moisturized cloth-pads. Apply them on your skin and let them do the trick.

There are two main types of chemical exfoliants. The Alpha hydroxy acid exfoliants (AHA) and The Beta hydroxy acid exfoliants (BHA). They both work by losing dead skin cells’ bonds.

AHAs are soluble in water and operate on the skin’s surface. Go for them if you own the normal or dry skin type because of their hydrating factor.

BHAs are oil-based, penetrate the skin, and operate deep inside the pores. Go for them if you own the normal or oily skin type because of their skin-calming property.

How to exfoliate your face

Physical exfoliants

First, double cleanse your face to remove any makeup or dirt. Take a small amount of the exfoliant and apply on your face in circular motions. Love yourself and please be gentle as you massage your skin for 30-60 seconds. Rinse your face and continue with your skincare routine with good quality moisturizer and facial oil.

Chemical exfoliants

First, double cleanse your face to remove any makeup, skincare chemicals, and dirt. Take the exfoliant product and apply on your skin. Allow it to settle for skin and read the instructions of the product. Then continue with your normal skincare routine.

Many people who don’t exfoliate as seriously as they cleanse, end up missing out on a lot of benefits. Also, don’t exfoliate more than twice a week. Don’t forget to exfoliate your scalp, heels, and even lips!
